The subject of meat consumption is the subject of a long debate. Scientists and doctors are increasingly recommending a switch to a diet based on plant-based foods. Moreover, the reduction of meat consumption is part of the sustainable development objectives established by the UN.  Let’s review together why we should consume less meat.

  • Health

Traditionally, meat is considered indispensable for good health. However, it has become clear that this is no longer the view that doctors take today. The reality is that vegetable alternatives are much more beneficial to health than animal substances. For example, some plant foods are just as rich in iron as red meat or even more. Thus, pulses can replace meat in terms of protein and iron.

  • Biodiversity and deforestation

If you may have doubts about the relationship between this topic and meat consumption, know that the link is very strong. Raising animals with meat for consumption requires huge areas of farmland to feed them. This is why several forests are cut down or burnt down every year, which has a massive effect on the loss of biodiversity, threatening species that are losing their living environment. That said, the elimination of forests implies the elimination of the natural environment for certain animals.

  • Global warming

It is a cause-and-effect relationship with the previous point. Animal husbandry implies deforestation, which is a major contributor to the increase in greenhouse gases and thus to global warming. In other words, a vegetarian plate is more ecoresponsible than one containing meat.

  • Water scarcity

In order to ensure good animal husbandry, breeders need huge quantities of water. The animals require a lot of feed so that they are quickly ready to be sold and consumed, which is the goal of factory farming. However, the production of the necessary feed results in a waste of water that can lead to a shortage in some cases. It should be noted that 71% of the water consumed in France is due to agriculture.

  • Animal rights

All the above points are complemented by an even more humane reason: the attention paid to animal welfare. “If slaughterhouses had windows, everyone would be a vegetarian,” Paul McCartney says on the subject. Animals are often treated and beaten cruelly in slaughterhouses before they reach our plates. They can endure a lot of suffering so that their bodies grow quickly and as much as possible artificially.
